This PowerPoint shows the instructions and examples of a Chapter Summary. My instructions and critiques will be in these white slides, while the student examples will be exactly what they submitted to me. Though there are a few mistakes, these summary slides were done VERY WELL!

The IDEAL slide! The ideal slide should have very little text and at least one visual. Think about what you prefer to look at during a presentation… Do you like to look at solid text? No one does. Appropriate visuals make all presentations more interesting.

The FIRST SLIDE The first slide will have your name, your partner’s name, and the pages numbers you will be summarizing.

 Writer’s purpose  Purpose for reading  Use your prior knowledge  Evaluate reading to ensure your understanding  Etc.

The previous slide… Could have been better with a visual.

The previous slide… Contained too much text in the picture… That would be very hard for an audience to read, plus it would take a lot of time.

 Read to be informed  Read to get directions  Read to be persuaded

The perfect slide… In my opinion, the previous slide was the perfect slide. There was there right amount of text, the picture wasn’t blurry and didn’t contain a copyright symbol. It was relevant and appropriate. The slide was perfectly balanced, with a title to let us know what they would be talking about.

 protocol  Boilerplate

Did you notice the TRANSITIONS? The following presentation would have been better without the transitions. Transitions are at times appropriate, but can be distracting. Plus they can take a lot of time…

Reading and Following directions

Reading persuasive Writing

PICTURES… Though a picture make be appropriate, is it also professional? This picture on the previous slide could have easily been replaced.

Use prior Knowledge

Evaluate what you read

Too Much Text. The following presentation could have been better if more text was removed and put onto note cards. If there is information that you can absolutely not do without, make another slide.

Reading Approaches Three approaches for efficient Skimming Scanning Reading for detail

Skim to Get an Overview Skimming- To quickly look through an entire document. Good for looking at Brochures, Pamphlets, Etc. Not good for Projects, Emails, or Important Documents.

Scanning Scanning- Quickly glancing through a message or document to find something specific. Used For finding things from an already read document. Phone # on a directory Date for an event via email Quotation from a Transcript

Tips Skimming Reports, Brochures, Articles Read the Title Skim Titles & Headings Informational Graphics Headings & Notes Sections Use Clues To Locate Info

Layout The following presentation was done well, but the student could have improved the layout. Centering pictures is normally more visually appealing than have an asymmetrical design.
