1 Christopher Cockerell was born in Cambridge. When he grew up, he studied engineering. Initially, he researched on radios and electronics. During the Second World War, he worked with a team that produced the first radio detection finder for the British bombers. After the Second World War, he bought a boat company. He started to experiment on how to make the boats go faster by reducing the friction on water. He first experimented with a hair dryer and some tin cans. Finally he discovered that the boat went fastest when it was above the water, supported by a air cushion. Hovercraft 2 Hovercraft 5 Blueprint for hovercraft 5 Hovercraft for racing (4 June 1910-1 June 1999) Inventor of the Hovercraft

2 Blueprints for hovercraft 5 Hovercraft 3Hovercraft 2 In 1957 he built the first hovercraft which could hold 4 people at 28 miles per hour. During the first test run, the boat flew for a little while and then sank into the sea. Luckily no one was on board the ship. The largest hovercraft can now hold about 500 to 600 people and about 30 cars. He made thousands of pounds inventing this. In 1969 he was knighted by the queen.

3 Marie Curie was born in Warsaw. She could not go to school like men do because in the olden days women had too stay home and take care of the house. But there was one special school just for women. And Marie Curie went there to study. She worked very hard on studying. She never had free time to do other things, because she worked all day. When she was in university in France, she studied physics and mathematics. Later, she got married Pierre Curie. They both worked on radio activity and discovered radium and polonium give off even stronger radiation than uranium. Radiation is used for medical uses, like the x-ray. It is also used for the thermometer. And the space crafts. In war, they use radium for nuclear bombs. Radiation is also used for astronomy. (November 1867- July 1934) Famous for Radioactivity and Discoverer of Radium and Polonium.

4 Polonium Radium Marie Curie was the first woman to receive the Noble Prize in Physics. Later in her life she won another Noble Prize. This time it was for chemistry. She was the first and only woman to win two Noble Prizes And I she was famous for those two prizes. She died in July 1984. She devoted her life to science. Radiation also can be dangerous. It can kill people who get exposed to it very often. The disease is called Leukaemia. That's how Marie Curie died. She got so engrossed in her work that she worked overtime and got exposed to the radiation too many times.
