The Scientific Method
2
5 Parts of the Scientific Method Big Question/Problem Hypothesis – What I think will happen. Procedure Results/Data/Observations Conclusions – What I learned. *Put these 5 steps in your notebook.
3
Big Question/Problem The part of the experiment when a scientist asks… What do I have to investigate or figure out? Good sentence starters are: What… How… Does…
4
Hypothesis What do you think will happen? What information do you already have about the topic that can help you figure it out? Your hypothesis should be in the form of a statement… If I do ________ then _______ will happen because _________. I think __________ because ___________.
5
Procedure Restate the procedure you are going to use to complete the experiment…IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Do not copy the steps directly from the book. If there are not steps for you to follow in a science book, design an experiment that will test your hypothesis and answer the Big Question.
6
Results/Data/Observations The results from the experiment should be recorded in a way that will make sense to you later… Paragraphs Bullet Points Table/Charts Graphs Diagrams/Drawings
7
Conclusion Restate the Big Question as a topic sentence In the investigation _________. I (we) learned that __________. Use information from your data to answer the Big Question… I discovered that ________ because my data showed that_________. Refer back to your hypothesis… My hypothesis was correct/incorrect because______. Every claim must be supported… I liked/did not like _____ because_______. Now I think that _____ because______. My prediction that ____was_____ because ___.
