The Life of Jesus (42) The Resurrection Account! (1)
2
The Resurrection is the focal point of our faith as Christians. It sets us apart from other world religions Without the resurrection our faith is vain! ( 1 Cor. 15:12-19 )
3
The account Recorded in all four gospels Matt. 28:1-15, Mark 16:1- 18, Luke 24:1-43, John 20:1-29 While accounts vary in details, they can be harmonized. This is MY attempt!
4
The account The first day of the week – recorded all four gospels Matt. 28:1 Mark 16:2 Luke 24:1 John 20:1 Mentioned – Mary Magdalene, other women, Peter and John
5
The account Matt. 28:1-4 The resurrection An earthquake An angel rolled away the stone The soldiers fled to tell the chief priests. They are bribed Matt. 28:11- 15
6
The account John 20:1-9 Mary Magdalene goes to the grave while still dark Possibly first to arrive (and alone). She finds the grave empty and runs to tell Simon Peter Peter and John ran to the tomb. Peter enters first.
7
The account Matt. 28:1, Mk. 16:1-2, Lk. 24:1-2 other women arrive They are headed to the tomb with spices. They too find it empty. They enter and see 2 angels who tell them Jesus had arisen. ( Matt. 28:5-7, Lk. 24:5-7 )
8
The account Jn. 20:11-18 The others leave, but Mary Magdalene stays, in disbelief. She sees the 2 angels and then she sees Jesus but supposes Him to be the gardener. Consider also Mark 16:9
9
The account Matt. 28:8-10 The other women, on their way to tell the disciples see Jesus. All the women arrive and tell the disciples they had seen Jesus and the grave was empty. Peter leaves and goes to the grave (again?) Why? He heard of appearances of Jesus
10
Other appearances: Luke 24:13-35 Two men headed toward Emmaus Jesus appears to them, though not recognized. They discuss events of the days. Jesus explains how the Christ fulfilled prophecies. Their eyes opened!
11
Other appearances: John 20:19-23, Luke 24:36-43 Jesus appears to the disciples (Thomas absent) As men return from Emmaus, Jesus appears to disciples who were together. He presents Himself as really being there! He opens their eyes and begins to reveal more to them.
12
Lessons: Jesus truly did physically arise Numerous appearances – 1 Cor. 15:5-11 He was recognized He ate food He allowed disciples to touch His body and wounds See 1 John 1:1-3
13
Lessons: As Jesus arose, so will we! Our hope – 1 Cor. 15:12- 19 1 Cor. 15:50-56 1 John 3:1-3 Phil. 3:20-21
14
Lessons: Our faith tested Even with teachings and seeing Him, many doubted! ( cf. Lk. 24:25-26 ) What about us? 2 Cor. 1:6-9, Heb. 10:38
15
Jesus DID arise! Does His resurrection give you hope?
