15. After the death of John the Baptist, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee. A great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick.

27. But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” The disciples did so, and everyone sat down.

29. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.

31. Then he gave them to the disciples to pass out to the people.

33. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.”

35. The disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand, besides women and children.

36. After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.”
