John 6:1-13 – “After these things Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip

answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him, There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and

likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.”

John 6:35 – “I am bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

V.1 – “After these things” o Jesus departed from those who despised and rejected Him o This should be a warning to all unbelievers

V.1 – “And a great multitude followed Him” o They were miracle followers instead of Master followers

V.1 – “And Jesus went up onto a mountain, and there sat with Him his disciples”

V.2 – “And the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh” o They were determined to kill Him

V.2 – “When Jesus lifted up His eyes, and saw a great company come unto Him” Matthew 14:14 – “And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and He healed their sick.”

V.2 – “When Jesus lifted up His eyes, and saw a great company come unto Him” Mark 6:34 – “And Jesus, when He came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and He began to teach them many things.”

V.2 – “When Jesus lifted up His eyes, and saw a great company come unto Him” o Compassion signifies to suffer with, alongside of another

Vs.6-7 – What does this answer of Philip reveal? o He calculated without Christ

Vs.8-9 – Like Philip before him, Andrew seemed blind to the glory of Christ o Have we formed the habit of instinctively turning to Jesus?

V.10 – How thankful we should be that God’s blessings are dispensed according the riches of His grace and not according to the poverty of our faith! o Their faith had failed, but their obedience did not! o Blessings come down to us through the channel of obedience o Obedience and blessing are inseparably connected to God’s Word

V.11 – “And Jesus took the loaves” o Only as the loaves were placed in Christ’s hands were they made sufficient o Jesus acknowledges God as the giver and provider of His creatures o His was the increase, but theirs was the distribution

V.12 – “When they were filled” o When Christ feeds His people He leaves no want behind

V.13 – Christ told them to gather the fragments that remained o We are never impoverished by ministering to others, but always enriched

John 6:35 – “I am bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”
