RUNNING RED LIGHTS or STOP SIGNS A Collision Countermeasures Presentation

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Statistics - Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) “Each year more than 900 people die and nearly 200,000 are injured in crashes that involve red light running. About half of the deaths are pedestrians and occupants in other vehicles who are hit by the red light runners.”

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Statistics “…stop sign violations are associated with approximately 200 fatal crashes and 17,000 non-fatal injury crashes.” NHTSA 1998-2002 statistics

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Introduction Running red lights and rolling through stop signs has grown measurably in the past few years.

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Introduction Since this unsafe behavior generally goes unchecked, the behavior becomes habitual and acceptable in many areas of the United States

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Perceptions of the Problem According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA): –“Overall, 55.8% of Americans admit to running red lights. –Yet 96% of drivers fear they will get hit by a red light runner when they enter an intersection.”

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 It’s a Serious Problem One in three people claim they personally know someone who has been injured or killed in a red-light-running crash…

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 It’s a Serious Problem This is similar to the percentage of people who know someone who was killed or injured by a drunk driver

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Why Run Thru Intersections? In a National survey, 15.8% of respondents cited “frustration” and “road rage” as reasons they ran through intersections

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Why Run Thru Intersections? However, nearly half (47.8%) admitted to running the intersection for nothing more complicated than “being in a hurry”

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Who Runs Red Lights? Red light runners do not conform to a set demographic – the dangerous practice reaches across drivers of all age, economic groups and gender.

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Who Runs Red Lights? They are everyday people: –Professionals & Tradesmen, –Delivery drivers & Couriers –Homemakers, Parents, Seniors and Young Adults

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Enforcement - Red Light Cameras Many cities and states have begun installing cameras at key intersections to photograph vehicles that run red lights.

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Enforcement - Red Light Cameras The studies that have been done show a dramatic decrease in collisions. More cameras will likely be installed every year.

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Bring it Home! If one of your neighbors continued to run stop signs in your neighborhood where your kids play, how would you feel?

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Its Not Worth the Risk Saving a few seconds per intersection (very few minutes over the course of a day) is just not worth endangering the lives of yourself and others.

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Anticipate the Need to Stop Always look ahead to anticipate light changes: both sudden acceleration to make a light or hard braking to stop short can lead to trouble

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 Slow Down When Needed Driving too fast for conditions is sometimes the cause of running a red light/stop sign so modify how you drive in poor weather or when you are late.

Copyright SafetyFirst 2007 THANK YOU! Thank you for participating in our program…. The decisions that every driver makes while behind the wheel lead to a specific result…let’s all try to make it a safe one!
