2 ERETES: purpose and history Purpose: assist other countries in implementing national accounts oERE = supply-demand balance oTES = input/ output table History: oProject started by Insee (1992) with some Eurostat grants oBased on standards for national accounts (preparation of SNA 93) oFocussed on French speaking countries oEurostat co-owner in 1997

3 ERETES: development Designed from a statistical point of view by one statistician at Insee, who trained his successors in the mid-90s IT development went through various legal supports, but continuity of the IT specialist Shared leadership: Eurostat for IT, Insee for statistics Implemented in several French speaking African countries (Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa)

4 ERETES: implementation of pre-existing statistical standards From a statistical point of view, there is little room for negotiation Currently, adaptation to SNA 2008 Development of few additional functionalities

5 ERETES: challenges Discontinuities in financing Difficulty in transferring know-how to some users Dependant from cooperation policy of co-owners (FR & COM) Linguistic issues for other users: South America, English speaking Africa High coordination costs (travel costs) Communication is an issue Organisation of the Community of users might become a real challenge
