Who is Asking for Your Help? Central Colorado Water Conservancy District (Weld County) Western Mutual Ditch Company Colorado State Parks Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield City of Aurora South Metro Water Supply Authority (8 members) Town of Castle Rock Centennial WSD (Highlands Ranch) Castle Pines North Metro District Castle Pines Metro District Roxborough WSD Center of CWCD (Park County) Mount Carbon Metro District
4
About Chatfield Built in 1975 for flood control Also a major water supply reservoir Surrounded by Chatfield State Park, used for recreation In 1986, Congress approves possibility to store more water
5
“The Chatfield Reallocation is an excellent example of the solutions that Colorado must embrace...” Governor Bill Ritter Potential Benefits New water supplies for communities and farmers Reduce reliance upon non-renewable groundwater Environmental benefits Allows for re-use of current water supplies Better use of existing reservoir vs. new construction
6
How will the project impact recreational users? Equivalent recreational experiences Brand new marina, roadway, park features and swim beach Emphasis on winter construction means minimized disruption to users
7
Water Levels Fluctuate In most years, water levels similar to current levels. In wet years, water levels could rise by 12 feet. More water available for homes, farms, businesses, recreation and the environment. Exemplary mitigation for recreational and environmental needs.
8
Impact on environment will be mitigated Environmental Aspects Inundation and water level fluctuation mitigation plan Enhanced riparian wetlands and endangered species lands Enhanced downstream flows Potentially better water quality and improved fishery
9
Estimated Costs Competitive with other water storage project costs in the region Average costs about $3.50 per person, per month.
10
Our Opportunity with Chatfield Reduce reliance on non- renewable groundwater Store enough water for 20,000 families of four for a year Provide water that farmers downstream can use to grow food Improve environmental and creational experiences for users
