2 Australian VET System The Australian Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector provides for formal education and skills training in technical and para-professional areas. Public providers = TAFEs – Technical and Further Education. Industry led and responsive to local and international industry skills needs. National Training Packages ensure industry endorsed standardised qualifications are delivered across Australia. Stringent regulatory and audit requirements ensure course and delivery quality.

8 The Challenge There is no doubt that TAFE practitioners undertake research in various ways (action research, qualitative research, research and development) and for various reasons (teaching innovation, partnering with industry, professional development, technological advances) but they do not always name it for what it is; and as they do not often write up their research in academic papers, they do not claim their research in the same way as their Higher Education counterparts. 10 TAFE QUEENSLAND TAFE Queensland SkillsTech is the largest public provider of trade and technician training in Australia with an excess of 20,000 students annually undertaking studies in the automotive, building and construction, electrical and electronics, process control/instrumentation, mechanical, manufacturing, engineering, sustainable technologies industries and HDPE Welding.

12 Real World Partnering: Shifting the Frame: Georg Fischer (+GF+), iPlex + TAFE Queensland SkillsTech High-Density Polyethylene (PE 100) Centre of Excellence at Acacia Ridge Training Centre. +GF+ Piping Systems division “Innovations for PE Piping Systems” showcase Weeklong event involved five stations each showcasing innovations High-Density Polyethylene (PE 100). SkillsTech station expanded on the certified welding training for Butt and Electro fusion welding, Squeeze off and Hot Tapping both theory and practical programs. The workshop attracted significant industry interest: Murphy Pipe and Civil, Brisbane City Council, SEQwater, Unity water, Queensland Urban Utilities, Thiess, John Holland, QGC, SANTOS GLNG, Origin Energy and others. Included as a case study exemplar by the Australian Department of Industry in the Australian Innovation Systems Report 2014.
