6 6 Mouse Operations  Click – to click on an object, point to the object with the mouse, and press and release the left mouse button. Right click – Point the mouse and then clicking the right mouse button is used to display the short-cut menu for that item. § Double click – Point the mouse to an item and click the left button twice, rapidly. This is used to start programs and open files. § Drag – Pressing and holding one of the mouse buttons, while moving the mouse is used to move items or select multiple items on the screen. U Using the Right Mouse Button When you click on the right mouse button, you will see a shortcut menu for the object you right click on. For example, if you place the mouse over the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop, you will see menu items that refer to features of the Recycle Bin. If you right click on the clock in the system tray in the bottom right corner of the desktop, you will see menu items that refer to the date and time. T This is what is called a "context sensitive" menu. A context sensitive menu changes depending on where the mouse pointer is located. In most windows programs the right mouse button provides a menu of shortcuts, to make your work more efficient. Experiment with the right mouse button.

9 9 Name Description A. Control Box The control box provides a menu that enables you to restore, move, size, minimize, maximize, or close a window. B. Border The border separates the window from the desktop. You resize the window by dragging its borders outward to expand it and inward to contract it. C. Title bar The title bar displays the name of the current file and the name of the current program. D. Minimize button Use the Minimize button to temporarily remove the window from view. While a window is minimized, its title will appear on the taskbar. E. Maximize button/ E. Restore button Click on the Maximize button and the window will fill the screen. After you maximize a window, if you click on the Restore button, the window will return to its former size. F. Close button Click on the Close button to exit the window and close the program. G. Menu bar The menu bar displays the program menu. You send commands to the program by using the menu. H. Toolbars Toolbars generally display right below the menu, although they can be dragged and displayed along any of the window borders. You use the icons on the toolbars to send commands to the program. I. Work area The work area is located in the center of the window. You perform most of your work in the work area. J. Status bar The status bar provides you with information about the status of your program. K. Scroll barIn many programs, if the contents of the work area do not fit in the window, scrollbars will appear. A vertical scrollbar will appear at the right side of the window and a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of the window, depending on the fit.

15 Exploring Windows and Essential Computing Concepts 15 Switching between Windows Hold down the ALT key and press the tab key until you have selected the desired window. Once the desired window is selected, release both the ALT and TAB keys. Tasks Not Responding To end a hanging task without shutting down the computer, press and release the CTRL-ALT-DELETE keys at the same time (simultaneously). The Close Program dialog box will be displayed. Select the appropriate task (will usually say “not responding”) and press the “End Task” button. CAUTION: Once the Close Program dialog box is displayed, by pressing CTRL-ALT-DELETE again, you will shutdown your computer and lose any unsaved information.
