6  In the Paint window, select File from the menu bar  Select Save from the menu  The following window should appear:

7 Change the Save in: box to a location that is meaningful and you will remember If it doesn’t, click on this arrow to select the right location Change File name: to something that is meaningful This is where you would change File Type if you needed to When finished, Click Save

8  On the desktop, Right Click  From the menu, select New  Now select Folder and enter the name  For sorting files, you can always drag and drop them into a folder you have created. Organization on a computer is very important.

9  In the Paint window again, select File from the menu bar  Select Save As this time  Change the Save in: box to The Folder You Created by clicking on the drop-down arrow  Click on Save

10  Type in some text with the keyboard (e.g. “I am using Notepad”)  Highlight one word that you have typed by left clicking at the start of the word, hold and drag the mouse, so that the whole word is highlighted  Click on Edit on the menu bar, choose Copy  Click the mouse elsewhere in the Notepad window so that no highlighting is present  Click on Edit on the menu bar again, choose Paste  Hit the ENTER key (on the keyboard) to move to the next line

11  Repeat the Paste operation until the text has filled more than one screen *Now the scrollbars should become active  Highlight one word again in the middle of the text  Click on Edit on the menu bar, choose Cut *The highlighted text should disappear  Click the mouse elsewhere in the Notepad  Choose Paste again from the Edit menu option *The text should appear in the new spot

12  If you haven’t closed any programs since the start of the lab, you should have several Windows open  By clicking on the “boxes” on the task bar, you can switch between programs

13 3 Ways to Exit a Program: 1.Simple click on the button at the top right corner of each window 2.Select File from the menu bar and then Exit 3.Alt-F4 will close the active window *So close all programs by any method

14 When the desktop is the active window Alt-F4 will access the shutdown dialog

15  On the Desktop, select the file that you created in TextPad.  Hit the DELETE key on the keyboard.  When asked if you are sure if you want to delete the file, click on YES.  You can also right click on the file and select Delete.

16  Windows stores deleted files in the Recycle Bin. You can use the Recycle Bin to retrieve files you deleted in, or you can empty the Recycle Bin to create more disk space.  When you are sure you don’t want any of the files in the Recycle Bin, click on the Empty Recycle Bin button.  Once the file has been emptied from the Recycle Bin, it cannot be restored.

17  If you want to restore ALL files, click on Restore All button.  You can restore individual files by right clicking on the filename and selecting Restore. You can also delete individual files from the recycle bin in the same way.  Restored files return to where they were originally deleted from.

18  If you haven’t closed any programs since the start of the lab, you should have several Windows open  By clicking on the “boxes” on the task bar, you can switch between programs
