13 VOCABULARY - WINDOW DEFINITION Window – A rectangular area on the screen that show a program or message EXAMPLE - Picture Window 13

14 VOCABULARY – START MENU DEFINITION Start menu – the list that appears when you click on the Start button; it will show the main programs. EXAMPLE - Picture 14

15 VOCABULARY – START BUTTON DEFINITION Start Button – The button on the bottom left corner of your screen that opens the start menu. EXAMPLE - Picture Start button 15

16 VOCABULARY – PROGRAM DEFINITION Program – A set of directions (such as Microsoft Word, computer games, Calculator, and WordPad) that tells the computer what to do to get a job done. EXAMPLE - Picture 16

17 VOCABULARY – MINIMIZE BUTTON DEFINITION Minimize button – The button that looks like a minus sign at the top right corner of a window; it makes the window disappear, but the program is still open. EXAMPLE - Picture 17

18 VOCABULARY – MAXIMIZE BUTTON DEFINITION Maximize button – The square button between Minimize and Close that makes a window fill the whole screen. EXAMPLE - Picture 18

19 VOCABULARY – RESTORE BUTTON DEFINITION Restore button – The button in the same place as Maximize that changes a large window to a smaller size. EXAMPLE - Picture 19

20 VOCABULARY – CLOSE BUTTON DEFINITION Close button – The button with an “X” that closes the window; it makes the window disappear and also closes the program. EXAMPLE - Picture 20

21 VOCABULARY – TASKBAR DEFINITION Taskbar – the bar at the bottom of the screen that shows all open programs. EXAMPLE - Picture Taskbar 21

22 VOCABULARY – TITLE BAR DEFINITION Title bar – The bar at the very top of a window that shows the name of the program you are using. EXAMPLE - Picture 22

23 VOCABULARY – MENU BAR DEFINITION Menu bar – The bar with words that is below the title bare and gives you ways to use the program. EXAMPLE - Picture Menu Bar 23

24 VOCABULARY – RIBBON DEFINITION Ribbon – A bar showing different icons; each icon does a different job when you click on it. EXAMPLE - Picture 24

25 VOCABULARY – BUTTONS DEFINITION Buttons – Icons that do different things when you click them with the mouse. EXAMPLE - Picture 25

26 COMPUTER VERBS A verb tells an action or what a subject is or does. The following verbs are introduced in this lesson: Open Point Minimize Restore Maximize Close 26

27 Computer Verbs Verb 1.Open Meaning To show a window Example If you want to use a program, you have to open it first. I want to minimize this window so I can look at another window. To make the mouse pointer touch something that you want to choose When you want to select an icon, you must first point to it with you mouse pointer. 3.Minimize To make a window disappear (but not close) so only its button shows on the taskbar 2. Point 4. Restore To change a maximized window to a smaller size I’m going to restore the window because I don’t want it to be so big. 27

30 1. Icons – Pictures that represent programs or commands The Windows Desktop The Windows Desktop appears when you turn on the computer. Sometimes it show a picture. It has these main parts: 2.
