Renewable or Nonrenewable ENERGY

ALTERNATIVE ENERGY Our Way to the Future
3
SOLAR ENERGY Comes from the sun. When sunlight shines on an object, it changes to heat and the object warms up. Certain materials change solar energy into electricity instead of heat. The energy captured by solar panels can be used to power a entire building.
5
How a solar panel works.
6
HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER Moving water is an energy source Water flows through turbines placed inside dams. The water turbines spin and produce electricity.
9
WIND ENERGY Comes from the movement of air which caused by the heating and cooling of the earth The wind must be “captured” and changed into electricity. Blowing wind turns a propeller on the turbine. Wind turbines must be placed at least 30 meters (100 feet in the air) so they can capture the fastest winds

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY Underneath the earth’s surface, there are hot water and rocks These hot areas can be “tapped” into by drilling wells to release the heat. The heat can be used directly to heat buildings, water and greenhouses for plants. The steam spins a turbine, generating electricity, as well. Water shooting straight up from the ground is called a geyser.

BIOMASS Dead plants can provide biomass that can be burned in a biomass facility. The burning heats water, which produces the steam to turn a turbine As the turbine spins, it produces electricity
