5 SSD Status Report July 20025 SSD module assembly

6 SSD Status Report July 20026 First Ladder : Assembly 1.Flexible hybrid – Cable bus connection : Z-axis glue 2.Precise positioning of the modules on a granite beam : 3D machine/zoom/camera 3.Modules – carbon fiber beam connection : gluing on the granite beam. Steps 2 and 3 : 2,5 days + 1 to 2 days for curing

13 SSD Status Report July 200213 First Ladder : Tests and lessons Assembled in November 01 –All hybrids working but one due to a human error –Moved several times –Flex-Bus glue fix on ladder –Powered On/Off several times –Mylar wrapped twice –Still working !!! Modules : –Bad wire bonds on the Costar : fixed –Geometry out of specs : to be fixed Carbon Fiber structure : –Shape and conductive part : fixed –Stiffness OK but can do better : internal stiffeners added ADC and C2D2 boards : –Few routing bugs, weak regulator, clean power Off : last version ReadOut board : –Slow control interface OK –DAQ interface OK –Additional pedestal offset OK –Few routing bugs : last version

14 SSD Status Report July 200214 First Ladder : Online monitoring Costar monitoring : temperature, I guard, I bias, V DD, V SS Pedestal offset and pedestal reference (not shown) Working Costar (in green)

15 SSD Status Report July 200215 First Ladder : Performances Uniform signal amplitude on the modules (both sides) S~50 mV Noise higher on the N-side : – N N ~2 to 2.5 mV N P ~1.5 mV S/N(P) ~ 30 S/N(N) ~ 20 to 25 No significant dependence of the noise level on the : –Power supplies –Inside/Outside temperature –Cooling strength –Ladder orientation –Leakage current Main contribution probably the coupling capacitance –N N to N P difference –N varies with the strip length NoiseP NoiseN SignalN SignalP

20 SSD Status Report July 200220 SSD readiness : module production Tender with Thales (formerly Thomson-Detexis, formerly Dassault) for the module production (connections and hybrid folding). 20 modules produced until October’01 (first ladder) Financial crisis in winter’01 : addendum to the contract Module production resumed in March’02 Technical crisis in April’02, 9 new modules produced : –Thales subcontracts its production to Bull –None electrically working, 3 silicon wafers broken –Out of geometrical specs (TAB extend twice bigger) –Production stopped, analysis of production processes –New production processes and tooling developed. –Production resuming. Working modules produced, folding and geometry not checked yet.

21 SSD Status Report July 200221 SSD readiness : Installation Strongly depends on the Thales production capabilities (unique producer on the market) 4 modules by the end of July, 12 modules in September : next assembled ladder in October. Increase of the production speed with high yield in Fall’02 Last modules for the full barrel by May’03 Half barrel ready for the summer’03 Second half possibly ready but its installation depends on the next RHIC shutdown
