Overview of „prePLAY“ project

Overall purpose of the project to develop and shape a network of young athletes that believe in a sound mind in a healthy body and reject any thought of using doping substances to enhance their athletic prowess How are we going to achieve this?

With a creation of a transnational network of (young) people who have the knowledge about fight against doping ANTI-DOPING AMBASSADORS Target groups, e.g. youth on grassroots levels of sport Ambassadors Anti-doping knowledge Peer-to-peer networking 1 st year of the project

How are we going to achieve this? With an implementation of numerous doping prevention and awareness-raising activities With an enforcement of a Play True Day in Europe With creation of model rules for peer networking in doping prevention programs 2 nd year of the project

Why fight against doping on grassroots level of sport? Studies have shown that doping among nonprofessional athletes has increased sharply in past 20 years, from 5% to 20% Personal enhancement through drugs is more and more common – through the use of drugs by students to improve studying to the medication of children to keep them calm

Why fight against doping on grassroots level of sport? The purpose of doping prevention and awareness- raising activities is: To protect integrity of sport To educate people about negative effects of doping on their health To point out the moral inappropriateness of using doping

Project characteristics and relevance

Background for project objectives White Paper on Sport; the first large scale European initiative on sport Documents and policies on combating doping in sport by Council of Europe, EU Commission and EU Parliament Analysis of European school system World Anti-Doping Code; Article 18

Innovative aspects 1) Fight against doping on grassroots level of sport Doping is commonly associated with professional sport, but we should not forget about youth sports population as well as recreational athletes Most of the founding and activities were directed to professional athletes until now Creating a transnational network of (young) people who have the knowledge about fight against doping will enable us, in a longer period, to create and sustain a new generation of European youth that fights for ethical and moral values of honest and fair participation in sports

Innovative aspects 2) Knowledge transfer To improve understanding of specific issues by the target audience We will use ambassadors as intermediary actors between educational team (academic people, such as university professors, NADO experts and other PhD experts) and target groups (participants on grassroots level of sport) This will enhance the adaptation of the academic level knowledge to the target groups

Innovative aspects 3) Peer-to-peer networking Youth have a problem with talking about doping: „Science“ of anti-doping often acts as a deterrent for youth We have to provide an environment with equality in power status Peer-based programs for young people are based on the idea that young people will discuss about different social issues with their peers rather than with parents or other adults that is why we decided to use peer-to-peer networking as a method of spreading the knowledge

Spreading the knowledge with peer-to-peer networking GENERAL PUBLIC SPORT PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPANTS IN SCHOOL SPORT COMPETITIONS JUNIOR SPORT TEAMS PARTICIPANTS IN MASS SPORT EVENTS TEACHERS, PARENTS, COACHES ANTI-DOPING AMBASSADORS

Innovative aspects 4) Anti-doping education as a preventive medicine Education is one of the most effective preventative tools It has to start early with an emphasis on values and health risks 5) Opportunity for retired young athletes A rising number of athletes, increasingly at a young age, face challenges to combine their sporting career with education or work With this project, we will give the opportunity to retired young athletes to become anti-doping ambassadors and get a chance for career development in the field of anti- doping

EU added value Project’s added values at EU level is through results that would be attained by activities carried out in all partner countries and focused on three main points: Doping is common danger and the most effective way to fight with it is the values-based prevention work Peer education is a powerful tool when talking about grassroots athletes or youth in general Giving opportunities to retired athletes to stay in sport as their second career

EU added value Collaboration between various European countries will allow us to: identify and share good practices create and sustain a wider network of young anti-doping ambassadors who will spread their knowledge among participants on grassroots level of sport develop and implement a module of ambassadors training and different programs of prevention and awareness-raising activities foster synergies with, and between, local, regional, national and international practices in the field of fight against doping

Challenges

Ambassadors recruitment Undoubtedly the first challenge will be recruitment of ambassadors whose future duties will be of utmost importance. It is important that ambassadors are: Athletes (present or former) Ambitious Willing to work (even voluntarily) Reject any thought of using prohibited substances Have enough free time to conduct educational and awareness-raising programs

Communication with target groups In our opinion and based on experience in the EADIn and UNESCO project, the second challenge will be: Communication with target groups Their motivation to participate in the implementation of prevention and awareness-raising programs Doping is still a taboo subject among youth and most of them do not want to talk about it

Thank you for your attention!
