1 Aunt Harriet’s Railroad in the Sky Author: Faith Ringgold Title: Aunt Harriet’s Railroad in the Sky City: New York Publisher: Crown Publishers, Inc Year: 1992 Book Summary: Cassie, a young girl, learns about slavery and the Underground Railroad as she tries to catch her brother, Be Be, who got on the Underground Railroad in the sky. Harriet Tubman informs Cassie that she can catch her brother when he reaches freedom, but she will have to escape and follow the same path that the slaves did on the Underground Railroad. It tells a story of the obstacles that Cassie, and ultimately all escaping slaves, went through to get to freedom in the North. Objective: Students will understand the role of the Underground Railroad and what slaves experienced during their escape to freedom Kristin Campbell, Winthrop University, Spring 2012

2 What do you see? In the picture, a slave is dreaming. Write a short story about the dream. What do you think the dream is about? What do you think the people were thinking? What do you think was the result of the conflict in the dream?

3 How would you help? Many people helped escaping slaves on the Underground Railroad by providing them with a place to sleep and eat along the way. Draw a picture and write a few sentences describing what you would do if you helped on the Underground Railroad.

4 What is it like to escape? Slaves went through many obstacles during their escape from slavery to freedom. Write a simulated journal entry in which you are a slave journaling about your past two days of escaping on the Underground Railroad. Describe what you have done, how you have traveled, and the people you have encountered, along with any problems that you may have had.
