Brown Gold Tobacco –v–valuable product that thrived in Virginia soil –l–labor intensive, needed more settlers –K–King receives taxes from profit so began to encourage subjects to move Headright System: 50 acres of land to each immigrant to Jamestown poor could not afford passage, rich did not want to come –i–indentured servants-sell self for 7 years for passage to America

6. Government and Rebellion managed by Governor and a council appointed by Virginia Company 1619 colonist formed House of Burgess, the first representative democracy in the new world. Bacon’s Rebellion -Indians attacking -farmers ask for help -Governor refused -form own army -Governor tells them to disband -Frontier men attack fort First rebellion of people against gov’t not protecting them in the colonies

7. Pilgrims/Puritans Many of the new settlers were Puritans, They pushed for education (so could read Bible), believed in hard work & founded the Plymouth colony (Massachusetts) in 1620. Before the Puritans arrived, they drew up a written plan for government. The Forty-one men aboard the Mayflower signed the Mayflower Compact. By signing they were agreeing to obey the laws set forth in the compact. This set up a direct democracy

8. Religious Dissenters Roger Williams & Anne Hutchinson challenged Puritan society & were kicked out of the colony. Williams founded Providence colony (Rhode Island) as a place of religious freedom. Anne Hutchinson said that people should seek God for themselves & not rely on church leaders.

9. William Penn * The Dutch (people from Holland or the Netherlands) established their colonies on religious toleration & fur trade. * William Penn founded Delaware and Philadelphia. He was a Quaker who believed in equality & was peaceful in war. *These colonies were based on fairness & treated the Indians fairly (bought land). These are the values American is built upon.
