Why is that Map so Small??? THE INS AND OUTS OF HOW TO USE A SCALE
2
What is a scale? The scale tells the relationship between distances on the map and distances in real life Ratio of map distance to actual distance
3
The World Under the Microscope Large Scale Map- Small Scale Map- Think About Task- Page 39 (a-d)
4
Three ways of showing scale
5
Statement scale Written in words For example: 1 centimeter to 1 meter (1 cm to 1 m) I centimeter to 10 meters (1 cm to 10 m) 1 centimeter to 10 kilometers (1 cm = 10 km) Which of the above is a statement scale?
6
Linear or line scale Shown by a numbered line Drawn like a ruler Divided into equal parts Most common way used Which of the above is a linear scale?
7
The Fraction Shown in numbers Also known as R.F. For example: 1:100 1:1,000 1:100,000 Which of the above is an R.F. scale?
8
But it is still confusing? The smaller the number on the bottom of the map scale, the more detailed the map will be A 1:10,000 map will show objects ten times as big as a 1:100,000 map but will only show 1/10th the land area on the same sized piece of paper
9
Try this!!! Arrange the following map scales from the largest to the smallest: 1:100,000 2 cm to 500 m 1:20,000 1 cm to 30 km
10
Answer!!! Arrange the following map scales from the largest to the smallest: 1:100,000 – 1/100,000 - 3 2 cm to 500 m – 1/25,000 -2 1:20,000 - 1/20,000 - 1 1 cm = 30 km – 1/3,000,000 - 4
11
We already know what a scale is but how do you use it?? What do we need to make accurate measurements??? What happens if the scale is in miles and you are looking for kilometers? Online Conversion - Common Length Conversions Online Conversion - Common Length Conversions

Measuring Distance :
14
What is the distance between : If I was going to fly from London to Rome how far would I have to travel in Kilometers? In Miles? If I took a cruise from Bombay, India to Mogadishu, Somalia how far would I have to travel? If the boat went 32 kilometers per hour how long would it take??
15
But what happens if I want to measure the distance of a road, a railroad or a river??
16
STEP 1: Place a paper strip along the first straight portion of the river. Mark the starting point A Page 43 will explain further
17
STEP 2: Mark the length of the first straight portion on the paper
18
STEP 3: Turn the paper strip along the second straight portion. Mark the length again. Repeat the steps until your reach the ending point you, say point B
19
STEP 4: Measure the length of the river between punts A and B with a ruler. Place the measurement against the scale on the map and read off the answer
20
The scale reads 1 cm on the map equal 500 km on the ground Thus, say if the measured distance is 3.2 cm, how far is it on the ground?
21
How long is the river??? If I wanted to take a safari down the Nile River from Alexandria, Egypt to Khartoum, Sudan. How far would I go??? Find a map of the Nile in your atlas
22
On the map, the scale showed that about 1.25 inches equals 5 miles. How do they get that number 1/250,000??? 1.25 Inches / 5 Miles (convert into inches) = 1.25 Inches / 316,800 Inches (reduce fraction) = 1 Inch / 250,000 Inches Online Conversion - Common Length Conversions Online Conversion - Common Length Conversions
23
Time to use Scale on a Voyage!!
24
DateCity, CountryLatitude/ LongitudeItinerary for each city. 23/ 10/09Hong Kong, China22N; 114EBefore I left on my journey, I prayed at the Tin Hua Temple for a safe journey and that I would not run out of fuel!!! 24/10/09
25
Steps to follow!! Measure the distance to the next destination using your atlas. Make sure it is not over 2500 miles or 4000 Kilometers To locate your city on your map use the latitude and longitude On Your map, mark the next city you are going to, write the name of the city and draw a line from the city you are arriving from Write the distance on the line that connects the cities Write the information into your travel log REMEMBER at least 5 continents and 3 oceans. It can be tricky, so be careful
