EMV Results for online Energy Education Study conducted by Lei Wang, PhD October 2011

Study Analyzed Two Impacts 1.Statistically quantify savings achieved by customers who used the online energy analysis 2.Assess utility program participation rates by customers who used the online audit

Quantifying Energy Savings – Study Statistics Between 12/11/2009 to 4/14/2011, 13,425 customers used the online audit 19,656 times 261,487 historic billing records were successfully retrieved from 11,623 customers (treatment group) For comparison, 4,819,849 bills from 209,154 customers who did not run the online audit using billing information were studied (control group) Customers who used Apogee’s Online Audit consume 28% more electricity than average.

Quantifying Energy Savings – Regression Study This regression study uses every individual billing record by decomposing the influence coefficients, such as group affiliation and weather.

Monthly Visits to the Calculators from Different Tiers

Quantifying Energy Savings – Regression Study A fixed effects (FE) regression study was conducted to estimate the savings obtained by customers using Apogee Online Audit. Results show customers achieved an average saving of 425kWh/year (3.30%) – Small customers – 44 kWh/year (0.70%) – Average customers -- 450kWh/year (3.86%) – Large customers -- 863kWh/year (4.17%)

Program Participation Programs Evaluated Low Income Energy Efficiency Program starting from Jan 2010. Program provides energy efficiency services and energy education to low-income customers to help reduce energy usage. Smart Appliance Recycling launched on Mar 1, 2010. Program offers free pickup of older, working units and customer incentive. Smart Home Rebates launched on Mar 1, 2010. Program provides rebates for qualified Energy Star appliances and HVAC equipment purchases. Smart A/C Saver launched on Mar 1, 2010. Program installs a digital control unit (DCU) outside customers’ homes near their A/C units. The control unit is only activated at times of high energy usage, during the summer months of June through September. Bill credits are provided to program participants.

Program Participation— Statistical Results There are 1,565,200 residential electric customers at the time of this study, 13,425 of which used Apogee online Audit during the period of 12/11/2009 to 4/14/2011. For almost all the programs investigated in this study, the treatment group shows a much higher participation rate than the control group. The only exception is the LEEP program, which targets low income homes. On average, the treatment group seems to have a higher income and energy consumption than the control group. Therefore we are not surprised to see a slightly lower participation rate of the LEEP program from the treatment group. Comparison of the participation rates of the control group and the treatment group is shown in Table (next slide).
