Immigrants came to the city because it was cheaper, more convenient, and provided better opportunities. Inventions such as the McCormick reaper and steel plow made working more efficient and they didn’t need as many labors to work the land so some famers moved to city.

Growing cities called for more unskilled steady jobs. By 1890 there were twice as many settlers in the city of New York then in Dublin, Ireland. By 1910 immigrant families made up more then half the population of 18 major American cities.

When Jane Mcaddams was visiting England she went to the first settlement house. Jane believes that the settlement houses would be affective because their workers would know how to address urban problems. Addams was a spokesperson for racial justice, and in 1931 she was the co- winner of the Noble Peace Prize.
