4/9/08 Urinary System Chapter 24 – Day 4
2
4/9/08 Renal Failure Decrease or increase in normal renal function Acute & Chronic – discussed in next few slides Hemodialysis Read about it 745-746
3
4/9/08 Renal Failure Acute ♦Abrupt loss of function for a few hours or days ♦Rise of creatinine in blood ♦Rise of urea concentration in blood (uremia) ♦There will also be defects in filtration, secretion & reabsorption Filtration: affected by blood pressure = ◦Affected by blood loss, fluid loss, heart failure Other causes: ◦Urinary blockage/obstruction ♦Symptoms: a lteration in urine output ◦High specific gravity ◦Muddy brown color ◦Low urine output ◦Fluid & electrolyte imbalance ◦Blood acidosis (why would that happen?) ◦Vomiting
4
4/9/08 Renal Failure Chronic ♦Leads to progressive reduction in kidney function ♦Effects: High blood urea (no symptoms High blood creatinine Urine concentration (H 2 0 concentration) is affected Leads to other problems Electrolyte imbalance Reduced urine output ♦Other diseases can cause chronic failure Glomerulonephritis Bacterial inflamation Polycystic kidney disease Kidney exposure to toxins
5
4/9/08 Renal Failure Treatment of Chronic Renal Failure ♦Hemodialysis ♦Blood is pumped through dialysis membrane & through dialysis fluid ♦Contents of the dialysis fluid? ♦Objective Artificial filtration & elimination Removes urea & wastes
