3 L A P IETA M ICHELANGELO “Pieta” means pity Michelangelo signs his name across Mary’s chest Mary’s face displays a sense of calm and peacefulness, Michelangelo wanted to show Mary accepted her son’s fate Mary’s body is not proportionally / she is very large, he does this to create a sense of compositional balance. Sculpture is arranged in triangular balance

9 D AVID M ICHELANGELO Sculpted from a single piece of marble. It was designed to sit at the top of Florence’s Cathedral Story from the Old Testament of David and Goliath. Michelangelo sculpted David in the nude because he believed the human figure was beautiful. He admired the art of the Greeks and Romans and modeled his work after there art.

12 -A real story depicting the bombing Guerica (a Spanish city) - during the Spanish Civil war -11 ft tall & 25.5 feet wide -This works shows the tragedies of war on humans / the innocent -Picasso painted images of anti-war / and the idea of embracing peace -Picasso decides to keep remove colour and kept it in black and white like a newspaper to show the lifelessness of war. -In Spanish an electric light blub is called “bombia” – it is a metaphor for the terrifying power of technology that can destroy us -Picasso depicts the warrior not as a hero but fallen to show how war can hurt us

21 The Artist: Francisco Goya -Goya becomes deaf - this makes him more aware of gestures and facial expressions -Goya painted this painting to show the inhumanity of man History of the painting - Citizens of Spain rose up against the French (Napoleon’s troops) who occupied Spain. Symbolism: Figure in white – the innocent / Jesus Christ Government buildings in the background – injustice by the Spanish Government they did nothing to help No faces on the soldiers – to make it timeless
