Intro to Adjectives in Writing What is an Adjective? A word that describes a noun or pronoun.

Why use it in writing? The day of summer was drawing to a close and a silence lay over the houses of Pivet Drive. Cars that were stood in drives and lawns that were lay: the use of hosepipes had been banned due to drought. Deprived of car-washing and pursuits, the inhabitants of Pivet Drive had retreated into the shade of houses, windows thrown in the hope of tempting a breeze.
