7 th Grade Human Development

 Biological Gender: xx and xy chromosomes; phenotypic sex (gentalia)  Gender Expression: How you choose as individuals to put ourselves “out there” gender- wise, regardless of our biological gender.  Gender Identity: who we experience ourselves to be. Transgender/transsexual – emotional disconnect from their biological self, i.e. the gender they are and the bodies they inhabit are a colossal mismatch.

 Gender Roes – primarily learned; Social expectations society places on boys and girls and men and women because of their biological gender, which then become internalized as rules we adopt for ourselves. They prescribe how we are to live out our lives – names we receive, colors, toys, games we are supposed to like, clothes we are expected to wear, ways we talk, communicate and relate to other people.

Sexual Orientation: It’s not a gender issue but a sexual one. Determined by gender or genders we are sexually attracted to in relation to our own. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual….

 Gender and Sexuality are not binary. Each of these expresses itself along a continuum of human experience. ____________________________________ Gender _____________________________________ Sexual Orientation

 In groups of 2, write down 10 ways your lives would be different if you were the other gender.  Think about:  Hobbies, grooming, clothing, talking habits  Favorite gifts, taste in music, the way you sit, walk, talk  Bedroom decorations, free time, belongings  How you handle conflicts, stress…relationships to family, teachers, approaches to competition  Language and attitudes about sex, school work, success and failure

 Gender Stereotype:  An idea of image about an entire group of people. Although the stereotype may be true for a few members of the group, it is assumed to be true for all members.  (example: Teenagers are lazy….)
