NQT Conference 30 th January 2015 Using Programming to Develop Children’s Mathematical Understanding Richard English Faculty of Education R.W.English@hull.ac.uk

Computing PoS – KS1 Pupils should be taught to: understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions create and debug simple programs use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs.
3
Computing PoS – KS2 Pupils should be taught to: design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs.
4
Mathematics PoS – Aims The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils: become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non- routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Resources for Today’s Session Everything is available to download from here: http://www.hull.ac.uk/php/edsrwe We are going to be using FMS LOGO (free download and on the university network) but the activities and main principles covered can be applied to other LOGO-type tools.
