GeoGebra: Free Dynamic Software for Geometry and Beyond Shelley W. Burnsidesburnside@hcps.us http://shelleysitpage.pbworks.com/GeoGebra Question to ponder: Task: Please open the website: http://www.geogebra.org/webstart/geogebra.html *may take a few moments to load How do I want (or plan) to use GeoGebra in my teaching? As people are arriving:
2
Our plan for this workshop: 1.Go through a brief tour of GeoGebra, including: Components of the program window Commonly used tools 2.Work through 3 Demonstrations together: Creating Diagrams and Modifying Properties Creating an Interactive Function Graph Exporting Sketches to Web 3.Choose some activities to work through on your own/brainstorming: Printed copies of several activities are available Online resources where you can find tutorials and activities Note any questions as they come up – we can work together 2 nd ½ of workshop on main classroom computer while others work on their choice of activities
3
About the GeoGebra Program: Can run on any computer that has the latest Java update installed Open-source software – free to use and distribute for education Originally create by Markus Hohenwarter (University of Salzburg – now in FL), but ANYONE can become a contributor View multiple representations at once: Algebraic, Graphic, Numeric

About the GeoGebra Program: Free resources are readily available: some include Help pages, support, wiki, and user forums GeoGebra.org GeoGebra.org Mathematics and Multimedia (tutorial/blog mantained by Guillermo Bautesta, Phillippines) … updated regularly, can subscribe (and friend on facebook) math4allages.wordpress.com/geogebra math4allages.wordpress.com/geogebra YouTube GeoGebra channel (tutorial videos) www.youtube.com/user/GeoGebraChannel www.youtube.com/user/GeoGebraChannel

Program Window

Demo 1: Creating Diagrams/Cutting & Pasting into Word 1. Create any diagram or graph. 2. To select entire Drawing Canvas, use EDIT... GRAPHICS VIEW TO CLIPBOARD OR CTRL + Shift + C 3. This creates a LARGE image. You can make it more usable by pasting into PAINT, then reducing the size to 50% IMAGE... STRETCH/SKEW OR Take a screen shot of your window. 4. Paste desired image into the file you're creating.
7
Demo 2: Creating Interactive Graphs (y = mx + b) and others 1. Create a slider for each constant you would like to manipulate. 2. In the INPUT bar, type in the equation to graph, using variables from your slider bars. **Make sure to type operations between constants/variables 3. Depending on the function, you can show the equation in different formats in the algebra view (right click). 4. Watch your function(s) change as you manipulate the sliders.

Demo 3: Exporting Sketches 1. Once you've created your sketch, go to FILE... EXPORT 2. General Options: Title will show up as title of webpage Can enter text above and below sketch Post directions/questions to complete Check Dynamic Worksheet to have it load automatically when page opens *See III. GeoGebra Advanced Tutorial Series on http://math4allages.wordpress.com/geogebra/ for more info...http://math4allages.wordpress.com/geogebra/ 3. Advanced Options: Can toggle on/off different functions and interfaces in interactive page Control area of window (online GeoGebra is running W:800, H:500)
