What is nutrition? Study of nutrients in food and how they nourish the body. – Nutrients are components of food that are needed for the body to function. – Digestion, absorption and transportation occurs after nutrients are consumed.

Malnutrition Caused by a lack of nutrients or an imbalance of nutrients. Can lead to the following: – Decreased energy – Developmental problems – Decreased focus – Long-term disease – Death

The 6 nutrients Basic categories of nutrients are important to maintain optimum health: – Carbohydrates-Val – Lipids (fats)-Beth – Proteins-Ryan – Vitamins-Sean – Minerals-Sean – Water-Brando

Assignment Create a powerpoint to share with the class. You must include the following: – Which nutrient you are researching. – Description of what the nutrient consists of. – Food products that contain an abundance of this nutrient. – Different subcategories found in your nutrient and explanation of: Example: Carbs=simple and complex, different types of fibers… – How much do you need a day of your nutrient? – Deficiencies that can occur based on your type of nutrient. Picture of deficiency – Caloric grams in each nutrient researched. – An unknown fact about your nutrient.
