Discovery Phase Research — basic, translational or clinical research Hypothesis-driven research Discovery follows Applications (clinical clerkships) Flexible start date (March-July), but once Discovery starts…..must be blocked! 5 month block (or 4+1) focused on RESEARCH

Goals of Discovery Design and carry out a focused hypothesis-driven research study Mentored research (faculty investigator mentor is key!) Analyze data Report findings in the format of a scientific manuscript Presentation at Medical Student Research Day in April 2015 and potentially at a scientific meeting Gain understanding of hypothesis-driven research and investigation

Discovery Most students carry out a biomedical research project Options for other types of “Discovery” Creative Writing, Ethics, Educational intervention, History of Medicine

Discovery--Timeline Faculty submit brief description of potential project(s) and NIH biosketch to Discovery website Online Directory/Database available for review by students [end of Sept] Students meet with potential lead mentors Student and Lead Mentor match finalized (each lead mentor can only supervise one Discovery med student) December 13, 2013

Discovery—Timeline II Students submit 2-page research proposal Deadlines based on start date (Jan-March 2014) Proposals reviewed by Med Student Research Committee Start Discovery: Must have “approved” proposal and IRB approval 5 month block for Discovery or “4 +1” Option Final Product: 8-10 page report in scientific manuscript format—due January 14, 2015 Presentation at Medical Student Research Day (April 2015)

Discovery—Timeline III Mentor MUST review 2 page proposal and final paper before submission NO EXTENSTIONS FOR FINAL DISCOVERY PAPER DEADLINE (January 14, 2015) Discovery will be graded (letter grade). Deadlines are Important—timeliness of submission will be incorporated into grading scale Be passionate, have fun!

How Discovery Grade is Weighted Final paper (format, quality of paper) 50% Mentor’s Evaluation 15% Socrates Exam 10% 2-page research proposal 10% Timeliness/Meeting Deadlines 15%

Global Health RESEARCH Opportunities Global Health Research projects are possible with either an Emory mentor or co-mentor Sites of Prior International Discovery Projects Africa (Ethiopia, Rwanda, Togo, Kenya, Mali, South Africa) Latin America (Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil) Asia (China) Europe (England, Poland, Rep. of Georgia) Funding: Dean’s Office provides partial support; need to discuss with lead mentor above costs involved; foundations (e.g., IDSA and ASTMH Kean Fellowship)

Opportunity for projects outside Emory but in USA (requires Emory co-mentor) Examples of projects from prior classes CDC UCSF NYU Military (Air Force, Navy, other) Washington, DC Homeland Security HIV project at Georgetown University NIH—opportunities as well!

Minimum Qualifications for Emory Faculty Lead Mentor Principal Investigator (PI) on some type of grant NIH, CDC, Foundation, Pharmaceutical, Emory Minimum of 5 peer-review publications Most mentors will likely greatly exceed these Faculty member can only serve as Lead Mentor for 1 Discovery student
