1) Qualifications: 35 years old, 14 years in the US, born in the US 2) Term Length: 4 years long 3) Succession: President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, President Pro Tempore 4) # of Terms: 2 terms or 10 years (22nd Amendment) 5) Salary: $400,000 a year (made by Congress) 6) Benefits: White House, Air Force One, Camp David, Secret Service for protection

7 HW: A Day in the Life of a President – Choose 1, due Monday
Assignment 1 – You are the President. Write a ½ page diary that shows what you do on a daily basis. Make sure you include at least 3 examples of roles of the President in your diary Assignment 2 – You are the advisor to the President. Create a calendar for the next week (7 days) and place an event onto each day of the calendar. Each event needs to be an example of the President doing a role, so write underneath the event which role the President is performing.

What are the powers of the President and what are his limitations?

The President makes a Law Limit: No Limit

15 Appointing People President can hire people (ambassadors, diplomats, judges) Limit: Must be confirmed by the Senate Hillary Clinton was nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate

Limit: President can’t remove Justices or members of Congress

22 Pardon The President can forgive someone of a crime and release them

23 Commute The President can shorten the length of time someone is punished (ex: 6 years to 2 years) Limit: No limit

24 Court Powers Believe it or not the President pardons a turkey every Thanksgiving Holiday

25 Action Hero President The President is a man or woman of action. Create ONE of the following: 1) Short Story – Create a title and a story of the President showing examples of him using 3 of his powers and what the result of him using those powers are 2) Rap/Poem/Song – Create a title and write about 3 of the Presidential powers and how the people feel about him using those powers. Needs 3 stanzas and a chorus. 3) Movie Script – Create a title of the movie and show dialog (what is said) between the President and his advisors. Make sure to discuss 3 powers that the President has and why he chooses to use them.

26 Impersonating a President – Day 1
You are the President. Do the following: Issue an Executive Order – Create a law as President about any topic. No approval needed. Appoint People – Choose 3 people in the class to assist you as President and for each explain in a sentence how they will help you. You must get a signed approval from 2 other people in the class (not the ones you selected to help you) Make an Executive Agreement – Choose a country and come up with an agreement between the US and them. No approval needed.

27 Impersonating a President – Day 2
4) Remove a Person – Choose one of the people that you hired and remove them. Explain in a sentence why they are fired. No approval needed. 5) Use a Court Power – Come up with a fake story about a friend of yours getting arrested and explain why you are giving a reprieve, pardon, or commute to them. Choose one. No approval needed.

29 Limits of the President (5.3)
Congress can: Impeach and Convict The Courts can: Declare Actions of the President unconstitutional President Franklin Delano Roosevelt served nearly 4 terms, leading to the 22nd Amendment

30 Limits of the President – The PAC
The PAC is an organization that raises funds for Presidential candidates so they can win elections Presidents are limited because they know they must get these money-making machines on their side to win elections

31 Before you leave… Do you believe that the President has too much power? (2-3 sentences)

32 Action Hero President Divide up into the following roles to create a toy action hero President: 1) Toy Builder – Use construction paper and markers to create a toy President plus at least 3 things that the President would use (think benefits, powers, etc.) 2) Advertisement Maker – Create a poster that advertises for your toy. It must be colorful and have a visual that shows the toy President and 3 things that he needs. It must have 3 sentences explaining what this toy President can do. (think powers, roles)

33 Action Hero President Using at least 2 of the powers that the President has, create a 1 page “action” movie script describing events in which the President gets to use those powers to “save” the United States. They don’t have to be real events but make sure they describe the Presidential power correctly President: “…” Advisor: “…”
