3 3 Module Aims To provide students with experience of the core technology associated with PC based computer systems Syllabus is divided into two distinct focus areas: –1) PC and core operating system issues and –2) Networks and network operating system issues. –The module assumes NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE.

4 4 Features Semester 1: Intro to PC build –Power Supply –Motherboard –Hard Drives –Busses, Processors, Memory –Peripherals and Cards

5 5 Features … Semester 2: Basic Networking –Types of Network –Physical Components –Hubs, Switches, Routers –Protocols

6 6 Module Delivery Year long module –Semester 1 (12-weeks) & Semester 2 (12-weeks) Every week: One x 1-hour lecture –This module expects a high level of independent study –A lot of information out there..too much –Use lecture material as guide Every other week: One x 2-hour practical in lab –Ensures all have hands on experience. –Build PC –Better than messing up your own gear.

7 7 Assessment –Portfolio 60% (class tests, practicals) –Examination 40% Class Test Semester 1 Week 6 : 20% Class Test Semester 1 Week 12 : 20% Practicals Semester 1: 10% Practicals Semester 2: 10% Exam at the end of Semester 2: 40%

9 9 Upon Completion You will be able to 1. Identify and describe the specific subsystems of a PC. 2. Install and format a hard disk within a PC and install an OS. 3. Install processor, memory, CD ROM & Floppy drives into a PC 4. Describe the features and role of a PC LAN 5. Specify and construct cabling components. 6. Compare and contrast a number of network protocols. 7. Describe the operation and purpose of routers, bridges, gateways and hubs.

11 11 Semester 1 Practicals 1.Build PC Case, Motherboard, Floppy Drive, Hard Drive 2.Format Hard Disk and Install Operating System 3.Examine Hard Drive Partitions within Windows XP 4.Install Network Card and implement peer to peer communication make and test network patch cable. Location EB E201 Many “build your own PC” tutorials on WEB ! Have a look beforehand

12 12 Finally This unit relies on YOU to do some work! Get different viewpoints, extra info from websites etc. There are many sites available Be careful, some sites give poor/wrong info Get into the habit of using the sites Don’t fall into the trap of taking it easy because you know it all
