1
ORGANIC COMPOUNDS KEY CONCEPT Carbon-based molecules are the foundation of life.
2
Organic Compounds Compounds made by cells and containing carbon Carbon atoms have unique bonding properties. A carbon atom has 4 electrons in its outside shell Does it make covalent or ionic bonds? covalent
3
Organic Compounds Carbon-based molecules have three general types of structures. – straight chain – branched chain – ring
4
Macromolecules Triglyceride Large molecules Examples: Proteins, Carbohydrates, Lipids, Nucleic Acids
5
How do you make a macromolecule? Need small building blocks These are called Monomers Link monomers together you get Polymers Greek Poly (many) Meros (parts)
6
Lipids Mini lab “Lipids on the Loose” Safety Lab groups

Lab Groups 1. Leah & Max 2. Jorge & Mark 3. Kaitlyn & Laila 4. Stephen & Harun 5. Brian & Joshua 6. Brayan & Ridwan 7. Jason & Bean 8. Ava & Jodie 9. Emily & Amanda & Deondre 10. Malani & Rosiland 11. Grace & Abyan 12. Victoria & Lexie 13. Tayler & Malorie
8
Fats Lipids are mostly carbon and hydrogen They store energy Triglyceride (fat in the blood) most common monomer of lipids Monomers – Glycerol Fatty acids
9
Saturated Fats Saturated fats have the maximum number of hydrogen Are solid at room temperature Most animal fat
10
Read those labels!!! Diets rich in saturated fats may contribute to cardiovascular disease Called atherosclerosis Lipid deposits called plaques build up in blood vessels
11
Unsaturated Fats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhUrc4BnPgg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QhUrc4BnPgg Unsaturated fats contain double bonds Liquid at room temperature Most vegetable fats
12
Other forms of lipids Phospholipids Major component of cell membranes Contain phosphorus & fatty acids Waxes Fatty acids and alcohol Natural coating for fruits lipstick Steroids Lipids bent to form rings Found in animal cell membranes Starting material to make male and female sex hormones
13
Functions of Lipids They are a great source of STORED ENERGY so we have it in the future. They INSULATE the body to maintain normal body temperature and they CUSHION the internal organs for protection. They produce hormones for the body called STEROIDS They waterproof surfaces of animals, plants, and fruits- these are waxes! THINK: Waterproof, insulate, steroids, energy, cushion… “WISE C”
