Feudal Powers in Japan Geography – Isolated Japan from invasion, allowed cultural sharing from China, limited natural resources Yamato Clan – established concept of dual structure of government (an emperor who actually ruled and one reigned) Korean Travelers – Introduced Chinese ideas and customs including Buddhism and Chinese system of writing Chinese Culture – influenced religious life, artistic style, simple daily life; clothing, cooking, gardening, drinking tea Heian Period – refined court society

Feudal Powers in Japan Samurai Warriors – strengthened localized rule of lords over central government Shoguns - center of power to military headquarters where shoguns ruled as dictators through puppet emperors Shinto – “Way of the Gods” – Japan’s religion; based on belied in the divine spirit of nature and on ancestor worship. Bushido – “the way of the warrior” – stressed the importance of courage, fairness, generosity toward the weak and dying an honorable death

The Age of Chivalry Knight in Feudal Society Education – age 7 began training as a page in a castle of a lord; age 14, began training as a squire, at age 21 became a knight Weapons/Equipment – saddles, stirrups, armor, high flying missiles War Games – fought in local wars or in tournaments Code of Chivalry – be loyal, brave and courteous; defend three masters – feudal lord, God and chosen lady, protect the weak and poor Castle Life – lived in and protected home of feudal lords, stone castles designed as fortresses with massive walls and guard towers Romantic Love – expected to defend chosen lady and keep her entertained with love poems and songs
