SPACCS 2008 summary meeting 1 Storm Peak Aerosol and Cloud Characterization Study May 12, 2008

Goals of today’s meeting Review of data collected Update of analysis/results Discussion of papers from field study –Identification of overlap and collaborations Timelines http://acd.ucar.edu/~christin/SPstudy/MainStudy.htm

Data Summary All data collected during the study (see Tables) instruments up to site: March 24, 2008 instruments down: April 14, 2008 (3 week period)

Meteorology Summary At SPL: General observations: –Pressure steady –Temperatures variable- but never below 0 0 F –Relative Humidity- only a few times less than 60% –Winds calmer during second part of study Average Temp ( o F) Average Wind Speed (mph) Average Wind Direction (degree) week 1 (03/23/08 - 03/30/08)2115244 week 2 (03/31/08 - 04/05/08)1714242 week 3 (04/06/08 - 04/14/08)2011253

Clear conditions defined as RH < 70% 27% of time from March 23-April 15 As opposed to Lowenthal et al. (2002) 62% clear from April 18-May 17, 2001

Meteorological Summary Winds typically from S, W, N (West) –From 150 0 -360 0 –Average (03/23-04/15) wind direction 244 0 (SW) –Average wind direction at 12:00 local time: 246 0 (SW) 0/360 0 90 0 45 0 135 0 180 0 225 0 270 0 315 0

Need to confirm times!

Mountain Meteorology 1 3 2 5 6 7 Dry Bulb T Relative Hum. - No data for 0 or 4

the aerosol absorption total aerosol scattering

Things to update/go over Mountain met: How do we confirm when we were in the free troposphere? What other data needs to be posted? –SMPS/APS Correct for multiple charge? (Lowenthal et al., 2002) – What times (am or pm) were the O3 files started at (confirm with Gannet)

Future Directions Comparison of Hi-Vol ECOC amounts to continuous measurements Comparison of high EC peaks to lab events/CO/CO 2 /O 3 data Look at Asian dust trajectories correlated with ECOC values Sources of aerosols measured

ECOC + Hi Vol Update SPACC 2008 Eszter Horanyi 5-7-08

PM2.5 Measurements Only 2 days of data 1 during low EC for PM10 and 1 during high EC event High EC event in both BL & FT, OC seems unaffected

PM10 Measurements 4 distinct high EC event during study First and last only effects boundary layer Middle two involve free troposphere in addition to BL

ECOC Analysis PM 2.5 machine reading systematically high Adjustments and calibrations currently under way Final volumes and concentrations expected by end of May

Hi-Vol Data Noise level is ~ 2 ug/m3 Teflon filters weighed with many having enough mass to move forward

Concentration of total, biological, and bacterial ice nuclei active at -7 o C in snow from Montana, France, Antarctica, and the Yukon Christner et al. (2008) Science 319:1214

Cluster analysis of biological ice nucleating data from Montana snowfall 2005-2006 Christner et al., in preparation

Multiple regression model for predicting the cell and biological ice nuclei concentration in Montana snowfall 2005-2006 Christner et al., in preparation
