2 Vocabulary Definitions Photography: the art or technique of exposing light to an electronic sensor or film. Exposure: The photograph or the end result of photography. Camera Settings: Aperture and shutter speed.

3 Vocabulary (cont) Aperture: The adjustment of the iris which controls the amount of light passing through the lens. Shutter Speed: The speed of the shutter to control the amount of time during which the imaging medium is exposed to light for each exposure. Focus: The sharpening and softening of the parts of the image. Depth of Field: The amount of area that is in focus in the exposure. Defined as foreground, middle-ground and background.

5 Aperture basics Controls light like the human eye’s pupil Measured in Full Stops (F stops) The lower the F stop number the more light and vice versa: f 1.4 – f 16

6 Activity Put battery and memory card in camera Turn camera on and remove lens cap Switch Mode to M – Manual Hold in AV control button and turn the “shutter speed” dial at the same time Find your chosen object and take 17 images (of the same object) all using different aperture settings.
