Addition and Subtraction of Integers Lead by:, Chris Killeen, Gina Sanchez, Alicia Crowe
2
Addition Basics: 2 positive numbers added together equal a positive +2 +2 =+4
3
2 negative numbers added together equal a negative -4 + -3 = -7 ( -a + -b = -a +-b)
4
Addition of Integers To add a negative number and a positive, subtract the smaller number from the larger and attach the sign of the larger number to the resulting sum. Ex: -3+7 1)Take the smaller number and subtract it from larger number : 7-3=4 2)Next, Attach the sign of the larger number: 7 is positive so a positive 4
5
Subtraction of Integers Adding Opposites Approach Subtracting an integer is the same as adding its opposite!
6
Adding Opposites Approach 2 – (-8) add the opposite of 8 2 + 8=10 An opposite of a number is a number whose distance is the same distance from zero. -88 0 8 spaces/units
7
Subtraction of Integers In the case of a double negative: 2 negatives cancel each other out to make a positive. Ex: -3-(-4)= 1 Makes a positive
8
Game: …… Rules: Split class into 3 groups, and each group gets 3 problems to solve
