Balancing equations
2
a balance chemical equation is a short hand method of expressing what happens in a chemical reaction. Its like a recipe. 1 cup flower + 1 egg + ½ cup choc chips → 12 cookies
3
There are three steps to writing a complete balanced equation
4
Step 1 Write the Word Equation The most basic type of equation is a word equation. Hydrogen + oxygen yields water It doesn’t give a lot of information
5
Step 2 write the Skeletal Equation That means change the words in the word equations into the correct symbols and formulas. H 2 + O 2 → H 2 O Just like you did in the unit on naming and formula writing
6
Step 3 satisfy the law of conservation of matter Make sure there are equal numbers of every atom on both sides of the yield sign. 2H 2 + O 2 → 2 H 2 O Do this by changing only the coefficents in front of the formulas, never the subscripts
7
Practice 1 Word equation of known facts Potassium chlorate decomposes to potassium chloride and oxygen
8
Skeleton KClO 3 → KCl + O 2
9
Balanced 2 KClO 3 → 2 KCl + 3 O 2
10
Practice II Aluminum hydroxide decomposes to Aluminum oxide and water.
11
Al(OH) → AlO + HO Al(OH) 3 → Al 2 O 3 + H 2 O
12
2Al(OH) → AlO + 3 HO 2Al(OH) 3 → Al 2 O 3 + 3 H 2 O
