What does Morphology study? Words have internal structure, which is rule- governed These rules are the object of study of MORPHOLOGY Study of the morphemes and the rules combining them

Bound morphemes (affixes) Prefixes (e.g., re-; over-; super-; anti-) Suffixes (e.g., -ish; -ness; -ly) Infixes (midde) Circumfixes (attached both initially and finally)

Derivational Morphology Unbelievable Un + believe + able ROOT: believe STEM: believable WORD: unbelievable Derivational Morphology: morphemes are added in a fixed order. This order reflects the hierarchical structure of the word.

Derivational morphology Unsystematic 1 – system 2 – system + atic = systematic 3 – un + systematic = unsystematic The root “system” is closer to “atic” than it is to “un”. “Un” is connected to “systematic” and not to “system”
