Sample Space and Tree Diagrams Unit 1: Probability, Topic 1
2
Sample Space List of all possible outcomes of a certain event List outcomes in brackets Example: Flipping a coin Example: Rolling a die
3
Practice! 1.Picking a high school in Pitt County 2.Picking a state beginning with “O” 3.Picking a prime number from 1 to 30
4
Tree Diagrams Used to help organize larger sample spaces Example: Flipping two coins Sample space:
5
Example: Flipping a coin, then rolling a die
6
Example: All possibilities for buying a vehicle. Choose SUV or car for style. Choose Ford, Chevy, or Toyota for make. Choose red, black, navy, or silver for color.
7
Practice! 4. Back to the Subway problem, let’s make a tree diagram for that! BreadMeatCheese WhiteTurkeyAmerican WheatHamProvolone Italian Herbs & Cheese Roast BeefCheddar Honey OatSalami

Probability Probability is the chance or how likely it is that something will happen. Sometimes you can measure a probability with a number. 10% chance of rain Or you can use words such as impossible, unlikely, possible, even chance, likely or certain.
9
Probability The probability of an event occurring is represented by a number between 0 and 1, inclusive, or as a percentage between 0 and 100%. An event with a probability of 0 means it is impossible. An event with a probability of 1 means it is certain to occur. An event with a probability of ½ means each event is equally likely to occur.
10
Probability from Tree Diagrams Step 1: Count how many outcomes fit your criteria Step 2: Divide how many total outcomes there are Example: Roll a die, then flip a coin Find probability of: getting an even outcome getting heads getting an even and a heads
11
Practice! 5. Draw a tree diagram and find the probabilities. Choosing between a large, medium, small, or mini pizza. Toppings are extra cheese, pepperoni, beef, mushrooms, or pineapple. You can only choose one topping. a)getting a large pepperoni pizza b)getting beef pizza c)getting a small pizza with meat as a topping
