Integrating into a New Society Challenges of assimilations (new language, place, jobs, easily taken advantage of, etc) NY had more foreign born then native born in 1890, 40% of Chicago & San Francisco were immigrants or their children Usually settled into ethnic neighborhoods Americanization – “melting pot”

Nativist Backlash Social Darwinism Cultural differences and job competition caused friction Considerable discrimination between groups of immigrants as well, not just with native born Americans Increasingly restrictive immigration laws and quotas Chinese Exclusion Act “Gentleman’s Agreement” – limited Japanese immigration
