3 Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) Born in Mexico City Background: Painted psychological responses to adversity at six years old she contracted polio which left her with a deformed right foot and the cruel nickname, “Peg-leg Frida” she was in a streetcar accident in 1925 left her disabled and changed the path of her life Also married Diego Rivera which led to many affairs

6 Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) Background: painted over 30 self-portraits between the years 1886 and 1889 used portrait painting as a method of introspection Lived a poor life, relied heavily on his brothers financial support Mainly a self-taught painter, learned by copying Master artworks Heavily influenced by the impressionist and neo- impressionist style Spent time in asylums fearing breakdowns

9 Judith Leyster (1609-1660) Background: produced most of her paintings between approximately 1629 and 1635 her artistic output decreased dramatically after her marriage in 1636 in order to take care of her family She was well known during her lifetime and ran a successful painting workshop where she took on many male apprenticeships
