Terms Surf Zone = Area where the waves break Berm = An accumulation of material from waves near the shore which looks like small dunes Longshore current = Flow of water that forms parallel to the shore as a result of surf waves

Terms Bulkhead = Manmade protection against waves for a building or lighthouse Jetty = A manmade barrier to protect the shoreline from wave action of passing boats Delta = A triangular area with sediment deposits from a river flowing to the sea

Terms Sandbar = A submerged sand dune sometimes exposed at low tide. Barrier Island = An island offshore that protects the main land during storms. Rip Current = A current which is formed when a depression is created from the shore to the sea. Water is forced from the shore to the sea making this dangerous.

Terms Spit = A piece of shoreline moved by a storm into the shape of a peninsula. Hook = A piece of shoreline moved by a storm into the shape of a curved peninsula Dunes = A naturally formed accumulation of sand in hill shapes which change with wind movement.
