Iowa Test for Educational Development Todd Bauer Lynn Carroll Karen Grossi Jeff Walker Tami Wenger

History Of ITED Created in 1942 by the University of Iowa’s College of Education Part of a program to develop a series of nationally accepted standardized achievement tests. The ITED is used in the majority of schools in the State of Iowa, both in the public and private education sectors Tests have found some use in other regions of the United States.

Description of ITED Norm-Referenced and Curriculum Referenced Test Given annually to Grades 9 to 12 Offers educators diagnostic data that drives remediation Provides better preparation for other high-stakes assessments, including state tests, ACT, and SAT Organizes reporting test data quickly and easily National Norms made in 2000, 2005 (copyrighted in 2006)

Purpose of Test Measures year-to-year growth in academic skills Compares the student’s achievements and ability with others in the same grade/level Shows the student’s academic strengths and weaknesses.

ITED Subtests Vocabulary Reading Comprehension Language: Revising Written Materials Spelling Mathematics: Concepts and Problem Solving Computation Analysis of Social Studies Materials Analysis of Science Materials Sources of Information

Preparing Students for Testing Informing and Motivating Why they are given Why they are given Year-to-year progress Strengths, weaknesses and gaps Students and parents note progress What tests are like What tests are like Test-taking strategies Difficulty level Communicating with parents Communicating with parents Reduce absences and tardiness Discourage unnecessary extra-curricular activities Maintain routine How to help Supplemental Materials Sample questions Sample questions Generalizability Generalizability Commercially developed materials Commercially developed materials

Administering the Test Selecting Test Test Levels Test Levels Level 15 9 th grade Level 16 10 th grade Level 17/18 11 th & 12th grade Convenience Convenience Same amount of time DirectionsTime 260 minutes of testing time plus 20-30 admin minutes 260 minutes of testing time plus 20-30 admin minutes Two or more sessions Two or more sessions Administered in the fall Administered in the fall Use results to guide instruction

Testing Students with Special Needs Make a written record of accommodations and place the record in the test file. Others must be aware that the grade equivalents, percentile ranks, and other scores could be misleading. Percentile ranks can still be used to identify strengths and weaknesses. Year-to-year growth can be estimated with developmental scores.

Alternatives for Students with Special Needs Large Print Versions of Tests Braille Version Audio Tape Editions Enlarged Answer Folder Extended Time due to magnifying reading or other limitations

Cost of Materials $40 per test $2 per test discount for groups $38 per test for groups of 10 or more students $36 per test for groups of 30 or more students

Obtaining ITED Materials Packet of registration materials sent to schools Schools register in the spring for the following year Figures can be modified at a later date Major revisions needed 6 weeks prior to the test Minor revisions needed 2 weeks prior to the test

Home Schooled Students Test materials are obtained through public school district or Area Education Agency (AEA) where the student lives. Student must take the test with the local school or the AEA. ITED tests are not available to parents or licensed teachers as individuals.

Norms The ITED was standardized in 2000 Stratified sample of 170,000 students Stratified sample of 170,000 students All public school districts in the U.S. stratified All public school districts in the U.S. stratified Geographic Region Basis of size enrollment Finally – Socioeconomic Status Within each SE Stratum- one group selected Within each SE Stratum- one group selected Catholic and Non-Catholic Private Schools also normed Catholic and Non-Catholic Private Schools also normed

Types of Scores and Scoring Reports Raw Score  How many correct Percent Correct  Not the same as %ile Grade Equivalent  Places students on a continuum to describe their achievement Developmental Standard Score  Compare scores to average annual growth, good for showing individual growth Percentile Rank  Different sets of %ile ranks are available so schools can make relevant comparisions involving their students
