ATLAS Tracker Group PPD Staff Talk 28/Nov/2005 Steve McMahon 1 Steve McMahon : An Introduction Backgrounds and Pre-History –Imperial College London 1987-1990 (PhD) UA1 experiment at CERN –Physics Analysis (Heavy quark production at spps) –Liverpool University 1990-2000 H1 Experiment at DESY (1990-1994) –Hardware (Tracking, TR Detector) BaBar Experiment at SLAC (1994-2000) –Hardware (CsI(Tl) Calorimeter), Physics (Charmonium and Sin[2  ) –University of California 2000-2001 BaBar Experiment … charmonium branching fractions RAL –Tracking Group (2001 – Today) Production of the Barrel Modules Production of the low mass cooling structures UA1 H1 BaBar

ATLAS Tracker Group PPD Staff Talk 28/Nov/2005 Steve McMahon 3 That’s all very well… But what is he doing right now? Currently Resident at CERN. –Have been since July 2005 Installation of the ATLAS Tracking System in 2006 –Preparation for the installation of the Inner Detector the inner detector is the complete assembly of: SCT, TRT, Pixels (fwd and Barrel) Thermal Management …... Isn’t that complicated? –Let me explain in the following slides –It is not rocket science

ATLAS Tracker Group PPD Staff Talk 28/Nov/2005 Steve McMahon 4 The Cooling Problem 1000 x 60W Inner Detector Can Generate 60kW inside a Volume about the size of a family car SCT 500 W/ circuit x 44 circuits 60 x OR Need to operate at -7 o C for 10 Years

ATLAS Tracker Group PPD Staff Talk 28/Nov/2005 Steve McMahon 5 Evaporative cooling is very efficient At removing heat. The Cooling Problem : The Evaporative Solution But now you have cold pipes Which You Have to Heat Up Again Evaporative cooling uses a phase change (liquid-gas) to remove more heat. It is really just a load of high capacity fridges (204 of them) built outside the tracker Liquid leaves very COLD ID Evaporative Heaters Rated at 120kW

ATLAS Tracker Group PPD Staff Talk 28/Nov/2005 Steve McMahon 6 The Heating Problem : The Implementation 5 Rack System 204 Heaters from 2 Caverns Issues of: performance Safety, reliability, engineering etc…

ATLAS Tracker Group PPD Staff Talk 28/Nov/2005 Steve McMahon 7 More Thermal Management Heater pads Good Neighbour policy Maintain thermal neutrality between detectors. Maintain temperature at boundaries Prevent formation of frost during access periods 8  m copper on Kapton 48 volt operating voltage, 30 kW power, ~300 pads Issues of safety reliability redundancy Picture shows a pad being fitted at the boundary Between the SCT and the TRT detectors

ATLAS Tracker Group PPD Staff Talk 28/Nov/2005 Steve McMahon 8 The Thermal Management Team Evaporative Heaters 110 V Switch System CERN & Oslo J. Kaplon Large Area Pad Heaters 48 V Switch System RAL & Oslo R. Holt Service Feed Through 220 V system RAL S.M. Cables Racks Infrastructure Networking Engineering (EID, Jason, Andy) Patch Panels …. RAL (SM, TP, Jeff B,..) + 6 Technicians Software PVSS ELMB DCS / DSS R. Bellini (CERN/Ox) ID Heater S.M. Pads from Ljubljana Large area Cu on Kapton Heaters ThermoCoax (Fr)

ATLAS Tracker Group PPD Staff Talk 28/Nov/2005 Steve McMahon 9 That’s OK… But what will he do next Installation of the ATLAS Tracking System in 2006 –Heater System : Delivery –Heater System : Installation –Heater System : Commissioning & Operation –Combined Tests (specialized configuration of combined Cooling and Heating System) Due to take place in spring 2006 Very Important first step in commissioning Take the Inner Detector to First Physics Physics Exploitation –Discovery Physics –The Tracker Upgrade
