CHAPTER 24 The Environment and Your Health

Section 1 - You and the Environment: A Single System Environment - everything “outside” the living organism - air, water, soil, other organisms, and forms of radiation. The state of the environment has an affect on your personal health. The choices people make cause our environmental problems, and the choices people make can also solve those problems. What is the cause of the world’s environmental problems and what can solve them? List products you used this morning. How well do you care for the environment? Pg.656

Section 2 - Human Impacts on the Earth Pollution - Contamination of the environment Global Environmental Problems: Hunger, Poverty, and Population Growth - 15 children die of malnutrition every 30 seconds Acid Rain-rain that carries acid air pollutants Global Warming - causes droughts and floods Ozone Depletion Water shortage and pollution Deforestation Ripple Effect - the effect seen when a pebble is thrown into a pond and waves radiate from it.

Section 3 - Shopping Every year 19 million more cars are being added. Motor vehicles are the world’s single largest source of air pollution. Recyclable - Made of material that can be used over again Biodegradable - able to decompose Disposable - a description of any product that is intended to be used once and then thrown Dioxins - deadly pollutants formed when chlorine bleach reacts with other compounds.

Products to Benefit the Earth Compact Florescent lightbulbs instead of incandescent lightbulbs Cloth dishcloths, napkins, and towels Dishes, cups, and tableware Energy-efficient appliances Haircuts rather than perms Recycled products Secondhand items

Section 4 - Energy Use in the Home Cooking Methods to Save Energy: Microwave, Stir Fry, Pressure Cooker In the conventional oven, each door opening drops the oven temperature by 25-50 degrees F. Household Appliances that use the Most Energy: Refrigerator, Hot-water heaters, Heaters and Air Conditioners Discuss time when the electricity goes out.

Section 5 - Water Use, Trash, and Garbage A running faucet uses as much as 3 to 5 gallons of water a minute. An average American household of four people produces about 100 pounds a week. The aluminum thrown away every three months could rebuild the entire US air fleet. About 70% of metal mined in the US is used only once and then discarded.

Section 6 - Hunger and the Environment Some 20 million people in the US - 12 million children and 8 million adults - are chronically hungry. Three Results of Poverty: Death, Disease, and Starvation Children represent the “social security of the poor.” Of the 92 million people being added to the population each year, 88 million are being added in the poorest areas of the world. List things in your life that you take for granted.
