PALS/ADDS RFI Flights 5 Nov 12-13, 2008Piepmeier - SDT Meeting #1
6
Preliminary PALS RFI Mitigation Algorithm Line 7 E-W, 3 Oct 2008 Double-Median-Filtering/Threshold Algorithm –The first median filter is applied to the data from 7 antenna steps within one data block –The second median filter determines an RFI flag to the data block centered within a window of multiple data blocks. Tv data only flag, Th data only flag, Tv-Th data flag After Filtering

Pulsed-RFI Statistics from GSFC Detector 7 Nov 12-13, 2008Piepmeier - SDT Meeting #1 Mean RFI for each of 22 flights Mean RFI for each of 378 11-minute legs RFI in each of 4.77M 20-ms samples Mean RFI for each of 8082 30-sec footprints ~10% of data has Pulsed RFI > 1K
8
Aggregate-RFI Statistics from UMICH ADD 8 Nov 12-13, 2008Piepmeier - SDT Meeting #1 ~10% of data has RFI > 1K (All flights)
9
CW RFI Statistics – UMICH ADD 9 Nov 12-13, 2008Piepmeier - SDT Meeting #1 NY City and surrounding ~1% of data has CW-type RFI > 1K
10
Non-Radar RFI Example: New York 10 Nov 12-13, 2008Piepmeier - SDT Meeting #1 Note: In band RFI!
11
Non-Radar RFI Example: New Jersey 11 Nov 12-13, 2008Piepmeier - SDT Meeting #1 Note: In band RFI!
12
WMTS: Rural Virginia 4876 community hospitals in CONUS (2004 US Census) Average ~1 hospital per SMAP footprint, but they will clump 12 Nov 12-13, 2008Piepmeier - SDT Meeting #1
13
Discussion Results –Radar interference about 10X worse than expected –CW-type interference about 1/10 occurrence-rate of pulsed-interference –CW-type interference concentrated in urban areas, but very strong SDT Help –Science Impact Level 2 Data loss requirement Issues with repeated denial-of-service in fixed locations? –Small working group to help How to extrapolate aircraft to satellite? Peer-review results 13 Nov 12-13, 2008Piepmeier - SDT Meeting #1
