Book Summary Sixteen year old Sara’s mother goes missing before she and Sara can move to a new town to escape Sara’s physically abusive father.

This shows part of the conflict in the novel. It shows how Sara and her family have been abused by her father for years. She’s been trapped their with her father. The drawing shows a girl who has been hurt. The wire wrapped around her hand shows how she’s trapped. This represents Sara.

This painting shows a woman grieving after losing a loved one. This also expresses part of the conflict in Sara. She grieves over the loss of her brother, Matt, who committed suicide. Sara even blames herself for his death because she feels she could have prevented it from happening.

This expresses how the main character, Sara, sees her past memories. All the happy times she had with her family are now gone and fading away. The painting at the left is spilling out showing a fading memory. The girl in the corner represents Sara scared and sad for how her life has changed in such a tragic way. Her life with her family is represented by the dark cracked walls that surround her.

This is when Sara and her mother plan to escape when she picks up Sara, but her mother never comes. Sara waits there for hours for her like the girl in the painting. The conflict is how Sara’s mother didn’t come and might be missing.

This artwork expresses how Sara sees her home. She sees it as a dark twisted place because of her father. Also because all the sadness she has had in that house. The small messed up shack shows Sara’s feelings toward the place. The darkness around expresses her feeling of depression and fear by the way it’s a creepy looking shack. You can tell of course she didn’t feel safe there. That is what the artwork shows.

This painting expresses the struggle with Sara and how she wants her freedom. Sara being the girl who wants to be free, away from all the pain caused by her father. The girl in the painting wants to be able to be free like the bird she’s letting go.

This drawing represents a struggle within Sara. She ends up in a little romance with one of the football players at her school named, Alex Maloy. She knows that if her mother ever comes she’ll have to leave him, but she can’t help be with him. The drawing is suppose to represent Sara and Alex together. Also how deep their connections are.

This drawing represents the setting where Sara is a lot, which is school. Sara is always thinking about her mom and worrying at school. She’s also starting to skip most of her classes. She does this because she thinks her mom was going to show up soon and take her.

This painting represents the struggle in Sara as the days go by. Her mom hasn’t come back in days. Her father also has started to become more insane and abusive. She is slowly losing hope, drowning in her fears. Like the horse for example. She doesn’t know how much more she can hold on.

This drawing represents the climax. Especially the way the girl is pointing the gun straight forward with no hesitation. The two colors black and white show boldness and strength. The climax was when Sara needed to decide to either kill her father or let him kill Alex. So she chose to kill her father. That ends the battle then and there.
