Defining Circle Terms Use the examples and non-examples to write a good definition for each boldfaced term.

Radius: A segment from the center of a circle to any point on the circle

Diameter: A chord that contains the center of the circle

Chord: A segment whose endpoints are on a circle.

Tangent: A line, ray, or segment that intersects the circle in exactly one point

Secant: A line that intersects a circle in two points

Major Arc: The larger arc joining 2 points on the circumference of a circle. Greater than 180 degrees.

Minor Arc: The smaller arc joining 2 points on the circumference of a circle. Less than 180 degrees.

Semi-Circle: The arc joining the endpoints of the diameter. Exactly 180 degrees.

Inscribed Angle: An angle whose vertex in on the circle and whose sides are chords or secants.

Central Angle: An angle whose vertex is at the center of the circle

Inscribed: All vertices of the inside figure touch the circumference of a circle

Circumscribed: All vertices or edges of the outside figure touch the circumference of a circle
