Jason Anderson

Types of Science Pure Science- science based on wonder and doesn’t really help mankind to begin with. Ex: Faster cars Applied Science- helps mankind immediately Ex: Medicine

INFRENCES!!! Inferences are logical explanations for things. Example: We drive cars Inference: because it is a means of faster transportation.

Fair Tests Fair tests are tests in which the controller doesn’t change more than 1 variable. (A.k.a the Iv)

Variables IV- What the experimenter changes in an experiment. Ex- water DV- What changes as a result of the IV. Ex- plant growth CV- What stays the same throughout the experiment. Ex- sunlight

Observations An observation is simply something you observe or that you notice. Ex: stone hinge has many heavy boulders stacked together.

Conclusion A conclusion is the summary of an experiment telling whether or not the hypothesis was proven correct. Ex: in this experiment my hypothesis was proven correct. People did run faster after a bag of candy.

Graphs Line graph- used when time is involved. Bar graph- used when comparing.

Statements Qualitative- a statement in which there are no numbers involved. Ex- The wall is white. Quantitative- a statement that includes numbers. Ex- there where thirty children in the room.

Mean/Median/Mode Mean- the average of a set of numbers. Median- the middle number of a set of numbers. Mode- the most common number of a set of numbers.

Hypothesis & Theory A hypothesis is an educated guess in the form of an if – and – then statement. Ex- If I eat lots of candy before the race, then I will go faster than I normally would have. A theory is a hypothesis that has been tested thousands of times and always ended up with the same outcome. Ex- the theory of evolution.

Control & Experimental Usually in an experiment there are two groups, the control group and the experimental group. Control- receives nothing new. Ex- people who don’t drink Gatorade before a race. Experimental- receives the IV. Ex- people who do drink Gatorade before a race.
