Big Idea Number Uses, Classification, and Representation: Numbers can be used for different purposes, and numbers can be classified and represented in different ways. Essential Understanding/Question 15-1 Numbers can be used to tell how many. Our number system is based on groups of ten. Whenever we get 10 in one place value, we move to the next greater place value.
2
What are three different ways to write the number 718? What is the greatest number you can make using the digits 7, 1, and 8? Write a story problem or a picture problem that has an answer of 718. Write the number in word form. Draw the hundreds, tens, and ones to show the number. 15-1 How do the digits of a number up to 4 digits long show the value of the number?
3
Big Idea Algorithms: There is more than one algorithm for each of the operations with rational numbers. Most algorithms for operation with rational numbers, both mental math and paper and pencil, use equivalence to transform calculations into simpler ones. Essential Understanding/Question 15-2 Adding or subtracting hundreds or tens is similar to adding or subtracting single-digit numbers.
4
Show 10 more than 354 and write it in expanded form. Draw a model of 214 using base ten blocks and show 100 less. Draw a model of 520 using base ten blocks and show 10 less. Show 100 more than 709 and write it in expanded form. 15-2 How does a three- digit number change when it is increased or decreased by a multiple of 10 or 100?
5
Big Idea Patterns, Relations, & Functions: Relationships can be described and generalizations made for mathematical situations that have numbers or objects that repeat in predictable ways. Essential Understanding/Question 15-3 Counting and place-value patterns can be seen on a hundred chart.
6
What is the difference between the patterns in the first and second box below: 140, 150, 140, 150 140, 150, 160, 170 Look for a pattern. What is the rule? 355, 455, 555, 655 Create a pattern of 4 three-digit numbers. Leave one blank for a partner to solve. Find the next three numbers in the pattern. Explain. 234, 244, 254, 264, ___, ___, ____ 15-3 How can you use place value to find and describe patterns?
7
Big Idea Comparison and Relationships: Numbers, expressions, measures, and objects can be compared and related to other numbers, expressions, measures, and objects in different ways. Essential Understanding/Question 15-4 Place value can be used to compare and order numbers.
8
How would you compare 1,000 and 999? Explain. 73134 tens 6 onestwenty-four 60379 tens 2 onesfifteen 59566 tens 5 oneseighty Make a table to solve. Which numbers are less than 50? Which numbers are greater than 50? Compare the numbers 729 and 792. Write the comparison two different ways. When looking at numbers like 204 and 330, how do you know whish is greater? 15-4 How does understanding place value help you compare three-digit numbers?
9
Big Idea Comparison and Relationships: Numbers, expressions, measures, and objects can be compared and related to other numbers, expressions, measures, and objects in different ways. Essential Understanding/Question 15-5 The position words before, after, and between can be used to explain number relationships. The number before a given number is always 1 less and the number after a given number is always 1 more.
10
Which number is one before 1,001? Explain. 673 is between what two numbers? How do you know? Explain. Write a story about 367. Use the words before, after, and between. What number is one after 265? Explain. 15-5 How do you identify three-digit numbers that are one before, one after, or between given three- digit numbers?
11
Big Idea Comparison and Relationships: Numbers, expressions, measures, and objects can be compared and related to other numbers, expressions, measures, and objects in different ways. Essential Understanding/Question 15-6 Ordering 3 or more numbers is similar to comparing 2 numbers because each number must be compared to each of the other numbers.
12
Order the numbers: 263, 243, and 253. Then, write the next number. What is the pattern rule? Write 3 three digit numbers from greatest to least? What could the missing numbers be? 565, 468, 431, ___, ___, 389, ___, 241 Order 254, 181, and 903 from least to greatest. Explain how you ordered the numbers in two different ways. 15-5 How is ordering 3 numbers similar to comparing 2 numbers?
13
Big Idea Mathematical Processes: Doing mathematics involves a variety of processes including problem solving, reasoning, communicating, connecting, and representing. Essential Understanding/Question 15-7 Some problems can be solved by identifying elements that repeat in a predictable way.
14
Identify the pattern, write the repeating rule, and extend the pattern. 222, 223, 222, ___, ___, ___ What is the pattern rule? 204, 224, 234, 244 Explain. Write a comparing story about 4 three digit numbers and have a partner solve? What is your rule? 613, ___, ___, ___ Explain. 15-7 How can finding number patterns help solve problems?
